The 33rd annual Griz Days Celebrations will be held March 5,6 & 7.
Every year the little town of Fernie celebrates for 3 days and 2 nights the giver of our legendary snow - The Griz. Come and join us in this year`s celebration of snow....

13 cm in the last 24 hrs

A nice little snow fall was a welcome sight this week offering 13 cm of fresh snow. It's still snowing and the bombing woke me up this morning - the tell tale sign of more snow on the mountain with the ski patrol doing avalanche control! Its an exciting day for all Canadians but especially us British Colombians with the Olympics starting tonight. And of course we have our own Fernie hopeful - Emily Brydon. If you are coming to Fernie this weekend there is an opportunity to show your support for Emily on national television. ON Sunday Feb 14 (Emily's first race day) Canada AM will be at FAR Slopeside Deli broadcasting live at 6:15 am and then again at 9:15 am and they want the place packed! Here is Canada AM's invitation to all of you "We are so excited about showing the world how Fernie supports Emily Brydon, and we would love for you all to join us."

Helly Hansen Big Mountain Battle
Helly Hansen's Big Mountain Battle is coming to Fernie and we want to invite you to join in the fun and excitement of a little adventure on the mountain you thought you already knew. We want to take you to corners of the mountain you may not have been to for years, send you hiking up a climb you would have never thought to do, go searching in the woods for a checkpoint and you get to do it all with your buddy and get tracked in real time GPS by our friends at Flaik.
This is a team-based event, which is open to all ages/levels and allows exploration of the entire mountain! Each team of 2 must cover off all the checkpoints around the mountain that will utilize certain lifts and incorporate hiking sections and will all be tracked by Flaik GPS. The top three teams with the best times to complete all checkpoints, runs and hill climbs will be awarded prizing.

Come Support Emily Brydon - CTV Live at Fernie
Come out to Fernie Alpine Resort this Sunday February 14 and show your support for Emily Byrdon, Fernie's pride in the upcoming Olympic Alpine events, in the CTV Olympic Morning Broadcast featuring Power of Community.
We want to fill the plaza with 200+ cheering fans as a backdrop for the live CTV broadcast. Help show the world that Fernie supports Emily! Bring signs, banners, flags, glow sticks, flashlights, costumes - anything to show off your support!

Two live broadcasts are scheduled to take place, first between 6:15-7:00am MT and the second between 9:15-10:00am MT. Guests can arrive at the Slopeside Deli, located in the Fernie Alpine Resort plaza, between 6:00-6:15am. Complimentary coffee for guests and a la carte breakfast items available for purchase at the Slopeside.

Smith Optics Fernie Freeski Competition presented by Fresh Sports
Athletes will be challenged by Fernie Alpine Resort’s terrain and legendary powder in the 7th annual Smith Optics Fernie Freeski Competition presented by Fresh Sports. Competitors will be judged based upon 5 categories: Control, Technique, Fluidity, Aggressiveness and their Line choice! The event begins with Registration and Venue Inspection on Wednesday, Qualifying Rounds on Thursday, Semi-Final Round on Friday and Final Round, Awards Ceremony and Party on Saturday! The Sunday will be held as a weather day.
Athletes are competing for their share of a cash purse and product from our sponsors! Spectators will be able to watch the competition each day from the finish area of the venues. Make sure you stop by to check out some amazing skiing! Event venues will be determined closer to the competition.

With 5 cm overnight and 11 cm in the past 7 days the skiing just keeps getting better!
Now I know some of you are saying 11 cm is that all?? And I know its not our usual epic snow fall that Fernie is famous for, but the skiing has been really good and this small offering from The Griz is a much appreciated addition to already great conditions!
Our small town is gearing up for the Olympics with banners around town that read "GO EMILY GO". Of course we mean none other than Emily Brydon - she is our hero this month and we wish her all the best in her upcoming Olympic Ski Events.

Some fresh snow = great skiing

A bit of fresh snow has contributed to make for great January skiing. Just a little over 6 cm and some moderate temperatures lately have helped maintain the already fantastic conditions and skiing continues to be really good! I recently skied the track set cross country tails at Fernie Alpine Resort and thoroughly enjoyed that experience as well! The trails were in great shape and it was great to spend time in the woods on skinny skis! Join us here in Fernie soon and experience the wonderful small town with tons to offer!

January has been amazing!

It was an epic day up at Island Lake Lodge. Boot deep and blue sky made for the perfect Fernie Day. This past week has been amazing fun at the Resort as the snow is soft, temps are mild and skiing is great! I'm going to try to play some hookie today and get out there for some more turns. January is in great shape people, come on down and book a Fernie special!

Skiing has been amazing thanks to the epic snowfalls we have been receiving! With over a 2 metre base the alders are slowly getting buried and the ski lines opening up! Clear skies and sunshine are dominating the next few days forecast, but then there is another change in sight, a warming trend with snow!! More Snow for Fernie!

Well with the NEw Year comes even more snow! Thus far we have received over 409 cms of snow and have a 213 cm base! 12cms fell last night alone and with 77cm this week I can tell you it is amazing and soft soft soft!

Well it's been another great week of skiing. Island Lake has had epic days and the resort is in excellent condition. New Year's Eve is coming and we are seeing miles of smiles from all of the visitors in town.

Enjoy holiday cheer as Fernie Alpine Resort welcomes Santa to the slopes!
Come out and ski with Santa! Santa will be on the slopes of the Mighty Moose, Deer and Elk Chairs from 10am to 12pm. Then come down to the base area and get your picture taken with Santa from 12pm to 2pm. Don't worry about bringing a camera, Santa's helpers will take the photo and email it to you! PHOTOS ARE FREE and the event is open to all ages!!

FAR Sneak Preview - a big hit!

Well the ski hill opened as promised with their "sneak preview" weekend and the skiing was great! There was quite a few opportunities to ski powder throughout the weekend. I spoke to many happy skiers who all had a great weekend on the mountain. The official opening is this coming weekend (December 5th) where the remainder of the mountain will open. I am guessing that the skiing off the White Pass will be phenomenal. We did loose some snow in the valley over the last week, but it has continued to snow in the mountains- helping to grow that oh so important snow pack. As Fernie launches into the full swing of winter the number of people with broad smiles on their faces goes up proportionally! Hope to see your smiling face on the slopes and streets of Fernie soon!

Fernie Alpine Resorts Opens this weekend - Nov 28 & 29

That's right folks epic early powder skiing is about to be had by the lucky few who either live in Fernie or make it a priority to get to Fernie this weekend. The resort just announced this morning that the skiing is just so good, they have to share it! With over 130 cm base they are pleased to be opening most of the "old side" with powder skiing in the Lizard and Cedar Bowls and groomers on North Ridge, Bear and the lower mountain. The weather forecast is calling for clear skies and sunshine as well!
So what are you waiting for.....get on down to Fernie.....see you on the slopes!

Over 100 cm's in the alpine

With the snow that has fallen recently we now have over 100 cm's at the top of White Pass Lift. There is a lot precipitation in the forecast for the next week or so and hopefully it comes in the form of snowflakes! That's what the weather network is calling for anyway......keep your fingers and toes crossed!

Snow, Snow & More Snow!

I'm just back from attending the London Ski Show and boy is it good to be home! Fernie welcomed me with snow and it is snowing pretty hard right now, with more in the forecast all week. The ski resort is boasting 70cm's at the top of White Pass Lift. This weather system seems to be all over the west. This morning on CBC radio I heard that Colorado, Utah and Nebraska were also getting hammered. This looks to be a good start to a great ski season boys and girls! Hope to see you here in Fernie enjoying what it is known for best.....the snow and the people! :)

Woke up to snow in my yard this morning. The mountains are out there somewhere - with lots more snow on them. Winter is definitely early this year.

We had a beautiful Thanksgiving Weekend here in Fernie, even with the below normal temperatures! It was wild - minus 15 Monday morning with green broad leaves still on the trees! I managed to get out on my bike 2 out of the 3 days over the long weekend. One definitely had to bundle up, and I even left my helmet at home and had my warmest winter toque that I own on! Oh well, at least the sun was shining. I met a lot of other people enjoying the outdoors as well. There is snow in the forecast and they are calling for an early winter.......that definitely seems to be the case here in Fernie!

Canadian Fly Fishing Championships held in Fernie

Well I was lucky enough to be an organizer for the Canadian Fly Fishing Championships that were held in Fernie last week. It was the most enjoyable week of the summer! There were over 40 participants from across Canada here to experience the incredible fishing this area has to offer over a 5 day event. I met some very serious fisherman who fish all over the world that were blown away by the world class fly fishing rivers and lakes, the incredible scenery and the amazing locals that Fernie has to offer! I did not meet one participant that didn't say they were coming back in the future, and I even met a few who were going home to make arrangements to move to Fernie! It is a great feeling when you meet people that enthused about your chosen home!

Fernie is a great place to spend time in the fall. The fall colours in the forests are enticing enough to go hiking every chance you get, mountain biking trails are at their best with crunchy yellow leaves to float over, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner......join us in Fernie for the family celebration this year.

Summer days dragging on!

The weather has been superb for weeks now and the Elk River is a great place to spend the day. While biking along the dike last weekend I saw numerous people enjoying the river. Some were paddling, fishing on shore or from a boat, or just walking or riding bikes through the trails that wind their way along the river.

They are calling for a gorgeous weekend which bodes well for the annual event of the year in Fernie - The Taste of Fernie. It runs this Friday night September 18 and most of Saturday, September 19. With 13 restaurants involved it is sure to be a great place to enjoy a meal with friends. Barney Bentall is the headliner on Saturday night, and there will be dancing in the streets in Centennial Square this weekend! Watch for news in next week's blog about the upcoming Canadian Fly Fishing Championships to be held in Fernie September 23-27!
